Review: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
KSD - Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has a knack for drawing you in quickly, offering an easy-to-digest plot setup that doesn’t waste any time. The film hits the ground running, introducing its concept in a straightforward manner, and before you know it, the adventure has already begun. It’s a movie that embraces being plot-driven, and it doesn’t hesitate to dive straight into the action.
However, there are a few bumps along the way, particularly with some of the character development and dialogue. These issues don’t dominate the film, but they do hinder its flow at times. For instance, the opening sequence sets the tone well, but there's a moment where Sean (Josh Hutcherson), a straight
A student, sees longitude and latitude coordinates and doesn’t recognize them. It’s a small detail, but it feels inconsistent with what’s been established about his character. There are also several moments where the film tries to explain certain plot elements in depth, which, while well-intentioned, can come across as overly didactic or forced. The exposition sometimes feels a little clumsy, detracting from the pace of the film.
Another minor issue is the film's reliance on the tired cinematic trope of gold being a central plot point. Similar to the most recent Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, the pursuit of gold in this adventure feels a bit outdated and somewhat unnecessary, especially when the stakes are so high. In a life-or-death situation, the emphasis on treasure can feel out of place.
That said, Journey 2 does have its merits. As a follow-up to Journey to the Center of the Earth, which helped kick off the 3D movie boom, this film doesn’t quite reach the same level of quality but still offers an enjoyable experience. While it may not be a groundbreaking visual achievement, the 3D effects are engaging enough to justify the extra cost, providing some fun and immersive sequences.
The cast is another strong point in the film. Josh Hutcherson proves himself as the movie's lead, showing that he’s more than capable of carrying an action film alongside some seasoned stars. He delivers a solid performance, establishing himself as a genuine movie star. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson brings his usual charisma and humor to the role, delivering witty one-liners and maintaining the film's lighthearted tone.
Michael Caine adds a delightful touch of eccentricity to the film, effortlessly embodying the adventurous spirit of his character. Luis Guzmán, known for his comedic roles, gets a much larger part here and makes the most of it, delivering plenty of laughs.
The movie maintains a consistent sense of humor throughout, which helps keep the tone in line with the previous installment. This balance of fun and action ensures that Journey 2 will appeal to both new viewers and returning fans alike.
In terms of visuals, the CGI in Journey 2 surpasses what you’d typically expect from a family adventure film, and it works particularly well in 3D. The action scenes are engaging, with some exciting sequences that are enhanced by the immersive effects.
Overall, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a fun and funny sequel that offers a satisfying continuation of the adventure. While it may have a few flaws in its storytelling and dialogue, it delivers enough thrills and laughs to make the wait worthwhile. Whether you’re a fan of the first film or new to the series, Journey 2 is an entertaining ride from start to finish.
